Climber Update

The cheque has been mailed, the play equipment has been ordered and we await a start date!  It is hoped to be early spring (without interfering with the Fun Fair of course)!

The Fun Fair Needs You!

The date is set, the DJ is booked and we are already imagining 11am on Saturday, May 26th, 2018.  The sun will be shining as the fair opens for the screaming kids to eat, jump and run around laughing.  We still have spots on our committee and we’d love it if you joined us! (It’s fun, we promise!) If you’re interested, please email WithrowHandS@gmail.com.

Annual Giving Campaign

We always feel a little sheepish sending out the letter for our Annual Giving Campaign (AGC), but every year we are always surprised by our community’s generosity and recognize that people like to give in all kinds of ways. This year’s AGC raised $5830.00, which will provide so much for our school and children.  THANK YOU! Come to our H&S Budget meeting on May 3rd and see where all the money goes.  You will also have a chance to vote on where we allocate the monies raised throughout the year.  Stay tuned!

Volunteering At Withrow

One topic has been discussed at many meetings – how do we get new faces volunteering?  How can we ensure that everything we want to do as a parent community has someone to spearhead each idea and project?  One such example would be after school programming.  We see the void, we know what needs to be done, but there is no one to lead (or even co-lead) this venture.  It is very exciting when we receive an email asking “How can I help?” and it’s even more exciting when they share what they would like to do or where their strengths lie. We truly believe that more parent involvement creates a stronger school community.  New ideas are just as welcome as new faces so, hopefully, you can roll up your sleeves and help out. It often doesn’t take much!

Withrow Spirit Wear and Fundraising With Everyday Purchases

Our kids love to wear sweats and they are proud of their school, so we have put these two ideas together for you. Visit our Withrow Spirit Wear page to see all of the options our new vendor offers.  Remember the Withrow Red is fun for students to wear at their team competitions.

Another great way we make money is through our Fundraising With Everyday Purchases.  If you were not already aware, we have partnered with The Shmooz, Mabel’s Labels, Oliver’s Labels, Snack Pack Reusables, Cobs Bread and Squeeze Please (reusable snack pouches).  We see great opportunities here and would love to partner with more, but we need someone to take lead to help grow this prosperous initiative.

Winter Home and School Newsletter

Climber Update

The final TDSB invoice came through late in November and with great surprise it had changed significantly, but after a good meeting, the TDSB absorbed $4,600.  We are paying $52,300 for the climber to be installed in the spring (fingers crossed). It has been a long journey in completing the schoolyard project, and some parents who started on the original committee are no longer here to see the fruit of their labour.  We should take a moment and recognize the hard work and money that our community has put forth to improve our children’s school experience. From a backed up drainage system in the pit and a dustbowl / mud pit of a field, to a basketball court, track and grass that the kids are happy to run through while coming into school not much dirtier than before.  Thanks, everybody!

Silent Auction

The meetings have started, the fun has begun and a date is set.  Our outstanding Silent Auction will be held on March 2, 2018.  If you have never attended this extravaganza, it is a sight for sore eyes to see what can be done to our gymnasium for an evening.   As always, our Silent Auction Committee puts forth a lot of hard work and a touch of class to provide us with an evening of fun, drinks and shopping – all without any kids!  Please remember that, while it is always a fun event, the auction is only as successful as the donations we receive; feel free to reach out to your community shops or places of work.  If you have any questions, feel free to email withrowauction@gmail.com.

Lost and Found

Our mini-mall – or as we call it, the Lost and Found – is being packed up on Wednesday, Dec. 13.  Please come and take a look to see if any items are yours; Monday and Tuesday are your last chance.

Fun Fair

Yes, we have actually started thinking about warmer days and wearing T-shirts on the sunny Saturday of May 26, 2018.  Right now all we are thinking about is adding new volunteers to our committee.  There are quite a few spots to be filled – from managing the slime table to planning the layout (an architect would be GREAT!!!) and recruiting new co-chairs (who have decided that, three fun fairs later, they are ready to pass on the walkie-talkies) – we need some new parents to pitch in.  If you are interested, please email withrowhands@gmail.com

Annual Giving Campaign

Just two more weeks to donate to your children’s school and get a tax receipt in the process!  There is a bright red box in the office ready for cheques, or you can donate via PayPal, which you can access by visiting this link: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=KJH65ZCZ9CZBJ. Community News: Basket Brigade

A group of moms from Withrow have launched a new charity called the Riverdale Basket Brigade! Their goal is to feed 75 local families in need (either due to financial hardship, recent illness, job loss etc.) by hand-delivering a complete holiday on December 23.  There are lots of ways the Withrow community can help… from packing and decorating the baskets to delivering them directly to the families.  You can also make a charitable donation by clicking the link below (yes, you will get a tax receipt). https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/32462.  For more details about how you and your whole family can volunteer, please either join their Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/298604167322583) or email Gillian at gillian@gillianirving.com.

September News

Welcome back to another fun filled year with our wonderful Withrow community!  Just like our children, we too are happy and excited to see our friends, catch up on each others’ lives and see how all our children have grown over the summer… while we have not aged at all! 😉  There is no better way to do this than the…

Welcome Back BBQ!

It’s free, it’s fun and it’s for YOU!  It will be held on Thursday Sept. 14th, from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. If you are free, we could use some volunteers to help with set up, serving, cooking and clean up, so click here to sign up!

Reminder: please bring your water bottles / reusable cups, so we can keep as many disposable cups out of the landfill as possible. ♻️

As you can see from last year’s event (above), it’s an annual tradition that’s not to be missed! We hope to see you there.

Important Info

Our first Home and School Meeting will be held on Sept. 27 at 7:00 pm.  We love when parents get involved and want to have a say about what happens at our school! If you’re thinking of being a class rep, it’s especially important to join us, so you can share the information with your classroom’s parent community. Childcare will be provided.  Our meeting agenda includes:

  • curriculum discussion
  • nomination of potential Home & School co-chair
  • new volunteer page on the Home & School website
  • H&S goals for the year
  • and more…

Cobs Bread Card Fundraiser

We are thrilled to offer Cobs Bread cards once again! Fiona Boylan, owner of our local Cobs Bread franchise, is generously donating 150 cards to our school this year. Come and pick up yours at the Welcome Back BBQ!! Each card (valued at $48-$78) will sell for $30, and entitles the bearer to one (1) complimentary loaf of bread per month (one loaf per visit). All funds raised benefit Withrow! How great is that? Many thanks to Cobs Bread on Danforth (at Broadview) for their continued support!

Withrow Spirit Wear

A BIG shout out to our Spirit Wear committee! Thanks to them, and our new TDSB vendor, we will soon be paperless; you can order items online and they will be shipped to your door. Yes, it’s true! And, in addition to Withrow’s official spirit colour, red, there will also be hoodies and sweats in black and grey options, too! We’ll share the link to our new Spirit Wear page on the vendor’s site as soon as it’s live. Note: we will be selling existing stock at the Welcome Back BBQ, so be sure to stop by the Spirit Wear table, where you can also get a sneak peek of our new Spirit Wear webpage!

Home & School Wants YOU!

Last, but most certainly not least…WE NEED YOU!!  We are currently working on a new Volunteer page on the Home & School website, and we’re excited about sharing it with you very soon!  There are so many roles, from wee to grand, that we’re sure at least one would match your skill set and fit your timelines. All of the amazing Withrow fundraisers wouldn’t be possible without the help of our parent community. You’d be surprised how much can be accomplished when each family volunteers only a few hours each year!

Thanks for reading and have a superb September…

Sincerely,

Your School Council Executive
